Stefan Roesch, PhD student (2022 cohort) from the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Safe and Trusted AI (the STAI CDT), recently attended the Game and Artificial Intelligence Multidisciplinary Summer School (GAIMSS) in Metz, France in June 2024.

GAIMSS is a three-day summer school followed by a two-day workshop which brings together researchers and students from computer science, mathematics and economics. GAIMSS aims to foster collaborations between diverse research communities, and to foster interesting discussions.

Stefan describes the summer school here, “The first three days were dedicated to lectures on: 1) Online Optimisation and Learning in Games, 2) Social Learning, 3) Fixed-Point Iterations in Markov Decision Processes. These lectures were very well presented and gave the students a strong introductory overview of the respective fields. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on making sure that those with little background in the field could grasp the material. The last two days were run like a workshop with presentations from various academics and their respective research areas. This was extremely interesting and lead to me discovering an idea that I could directly apply to my own research”.

Stefan also had the opportunity to prepare a flash talk of his recent work and present a poster to the other attendees.

For Stefan, the summer school built his knowledge further and was an opportunity to network with fellow PhD students. He said, “The summer school allowed me to develop a strong understanding of the lecture topics and broaden my knowledge of game theory and economics more generally. I was also able to meet and discuss my ideas with other PhD students from around the world and get feedback from others working in a similar area to me”.
