STAI CDT student Madeleine Waller presented the paper, ‘Recommendations for Bias Mitigation Methods: Applicability and Legality’ at the Workshop on Fairness and Bias in AI. This workshop was co-located with ECAI 2023 in Kraków, Poland.

The paper discusses practical issues and regulatory challenges with current methods for mitigating bias in AI. As Madeleine explains, “The limitations we found show the need for a different approach to developing bias mitigation methods. To tackle these issues, we provide recommendations for new and effective methods that can be used in real-world situations and adhere to legal standards. In practice, these recommendations will help improve research that ensures AI systems do not discriminate against individuals or protected groups.”

Madeleine really enjoyed the opportunity to present the paper and network. As she says, “This was the biggest conference I had been to, and my first published paper! The workshop I presented at was the highlight because I was in a room full of people who were interested in similar topics to me and I had some very interesting discussions. Exploring Kraków was also a fun experience, especially the conference dinner in the salt mines!”
