Wenxi Wu, a student (2022 cohort) in the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Safe and Trusted AI (the STAI CDT) has published the paper ‘S*: On Safe and Time Efficient Robot Motion Planning’ at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2023).
The paper focuses on safety and speed within the interactions between robots and humans. As Wenxi explains, “It is a method to make robot motion both fast and safe. As an increasing number of humans and robots share the workspace in the real world, the plans for safe robot motion are crucial. While safe robot movement usually decreases velocity, our algorithm solves the cost balance between maximum robot velocity and maximum allowed safe velocity for humans. It chooses the time-efficient path with higher safe velocities for humans in the workspace”.
Wenxi really enjoyed ICRA 2023, particularly the chance to network with and learn from researchers with similar interests and research topics. Wenxi said, “During the poster session, I got to talk to many authors of papers that I am interested in. I learned about many fascinating novel approaches in robot motion planning. It was a great pleasure to communicate with roboticists from different institutes and share research experiences”.
Wenxi has really enjoyed his first year of being part of the CDT and said, “The STAI CDT has seminars and masterclasses on a variety of exciting topics in AI. Also, it is a great community space for us to discuss our research and get inspired by each other”.
