STAI CDT PhD student, Madeleine Waller hosted an event at King’s College London with Lord Clement-Jones about Regulating AI.
Lord Clement-Jones was the Chair of the House of Lords Select Committee on AI, and is the current co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group in AI.
Around 40 people attended the event, which consisted of a short speech from Clement-Jones, followed by a moderated Q&A with Madeleine Waller, which was then opened to the audience.
The event was an opportunity to cover the following topics:
- The UK government’s current approach to regulating AI.
- How the approach of the UK government differs to others around the world.
- What role the Liberal Democrats play in shaping AI policy.
- Lord Clement-Jones new bill (Public Authority Algorithmic and Automated Decision-Making Systems Bill)
- How we can shift the conversation around AI from media-driven hype to a focus on real-world applications and their impact.
- What we think the future of AI will look like.
Lord Clement-Jones provided fascinating insights, engaging both those working in AI and a broader audience. He emphasised the need for increased regulation and stressed the idea that regulation hinders innovation is a misconception.
This event took place in February and was organised by the King’s College London Liberal Democrats. Madeleine Waller would like to express a big thank you to Tobias Harvey, Sam Lindsley, Joep Lahaije and the rest of the committee for their support in organising the event.
