UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Safe and Trusted AI PhD student, Mackenzie Jorgensen (2020 cohort), was the takeover host on the most recent episode of Kings’ College London’s Careers in Your Ears podcast, ‘Season 8 Episode 2: A career in AI research in academia and industry’.

The Careers in Your Ears podcast is targeted towards PhD students and researchers. It features interviews with guests which offer insights into researchers’ journeys through their careers both within and outside of academia.

Mackenzie interviewed Dr Luis Pizarro, Global Responsible AI Leader at EY and Visiting Senior Lecturer at King’s College London. The first half of this episode covers a great discussion about Luis’s career in academia, the importance of collaborations and keeping your career options open between academia and industry and the second half delves into the challenges we face in using AI, including responsible AI and how it could be used to counter disinformation and fake news.

Mackenzie really enjoyed her experience as host and said, “As an avid podcast listener, I had a blast preparing for and interviewing Luis about his career in AI and the current challenges with AI for KCL’s Careers in Your Ears podcast. I was especially curious to hear about how he moves between industry and academia and what the pros and cons are of both paths.”

Mackenzie also hopes the podcast will help others reflect on their career journeys and said,  “His advice has helped me think more confidently about my next steps post PhD and I hope other young researchers find similar nuggets of information that can help them as they choose their next steps too.”
